Beagles are popular pets due to their size, intelligence, even temperedness and absence of hereditary health issues. They are good with children and are easily won over by strangers, makin them poor guard dogs. Interestingly, the Beagle will howl when confronted with a strange situation, thus making them good watchdogs. Their excellent sense of smell and tracking instincts makes them well-suited for use as detection dogs (beagles are scent hounds and were developed for tracking prey). However, their being determined and single-minded can make them hard to train.
