Labrador Retrievers (aka Labrador or Labs) are the most popular breed according to AKC rankings. This should come as no surprise, given their well-behaved nature around children and the elderly. Additionally, the Labrador Retriever is an even-tempered, playful and athletic dog. They also serve well as therapy, law enforcement and hunting dogs. However, they have a huge appetite, so overeating must be guarded against. They also like to explore, and may wander off and be lost or stolen; some recommend microchipping as well as having the owner's information on the tags and collar.
